Websites 101

If you're unsure where to even begin putting your ideas for a website together, or if all the technical jargon leaves your brain numb, you're not alone. It's not only important to us that we help you put together a great website, but also that we help you understand how your website works and what you're getting for your money.

Choosing a Domain

The first step to putting together your website is choosing a domain, which is simply the address people will enter on their computer to access your website. For example, www.onpointprofessionals.com is our domain. Once you've chosen your domain, we will register it for you so no one else can use it. The cost of registering your domain name is included in your monthly maintenance fee. Be sure to check out our Guide to Choosing a Good Domain.

Planning Your Site

We're here to help you put together a well-designed site that is interesting, easy-to-navigate, and convinces your customers to do business with you. But to do that, we'll need some input from you on some basic elements of the site. Check out our Step-By-Step Guide to Great Websites to get started.

Buying Space on a Hosting Server

If you create a document on your home computer, the only person who can access it is you, right? The same is true for websites. A website is created on a personal computer, then uploaded (another word for "sent") to a special computer called a hosting server that allows it to be accessed by other computers. There are many companies that own large hosting servers and will let us "rent" some space on their server where we can house the files and images that make up your website. Once the website files are there, anyone in the world can view them by typing in your domain. Neat, huh? The cost of renting server space for your site is included in your monthly maintenance fee.

Email Accounts

Having an email address that includes your business name lends credibility to your company and makes your business seem more established. For example, if your name is John and you own Owens Construction, it lends credibility to your business if your email address is john@owensconstruction.com rather than beavis19@yahoo.com.

Your domain name comes with 500 free email accounts that you can use. These accounts can be set up in your favorite email program, such as Microsoft Outlook. We will set these accounts up for you and make administrative changes as part of your monthly maintenance fee.

Site Back-Ups

Have you ever done hours of work on your computer without saving your files, and then the power flickered? It's a hard lesson that many have learned in the importance of "backing up" your files. At OnPoint Professionals, we conduct weekly back-ups of your website's files to make sure it is never lost. This service is included in your monthly maintenance fee.

Site Checks

If you've spent much time on the internet, you've probably clicked on a link that did nothing, or that led to a site that was disabled years ago. Problems like this reflect poorly on your business, so we're careful to make sure all of our sites are in good working order. We conduct periodic site checks to scan for broken links, missing images, and other problems. This is included in your site's monthly maintenance fee.

Troubleshooting Server Issues

OnPoint Professionals purchases space on a hosting server to put your website on and make it accessible to others. Very rarely, there may be issues with the server. While servers do occasionally go down, we will take responsibility for making sure the problem is addressed and corrected by our hosting company. This service is included in your site's monthly maintenance fee.

Making Changes to Your Site

After your website is complete, you may not have a lot of changes to make. Or you may have a lot! We're committed to keeping your website up-to-date and completing your updates promptly. You'll simply email us with a description of your changes and we'll post them as soon as possible. Changes and updates to your site are charged at our hourly rate.
